How this comparison was built

Most of our guides rank products on what verified owners report. For Breville, the owner evidence does not separate the models clearly, so this page is built mainly on each machine’s published specification. Where we have verified reviews to draw on, we report what they show and mark it as owner evidence.

What owners say about Breville as a group

Breville has a strong reputation, and owners do praise the quality and ease of use. But across the Breville machines where we have a usable sample, praise and complaints are close to even. On one model, the Bambino Plus, complaints outnumber praise.

The complaints repeat: durability, machines or grinders that stop working, and, on the more expensive models, value and the cost of repairs. That matches our wider finding in the Espresso Machine Complaint Report: reliability, not coffee quality, decides owner satisfaction. For when failures tend to happen, see how long espresso machines last.

None of this makes Breville a brand to avoid. It means you should choose on features, buy where returns are easy, and use the machine heavily in its first weeks.

Best starting point
Breville Bambino espresso machine in brushed stainless steel

Breville Bambino Espresso Machine (BES450)

Noolaguide says

The compact machine to start with, and the Breville with the most owner evidence in our analysis. It reaches brewing temperature in three seconds, regulates temperature digitally and pre-infuses at low pressure. It is small and light, at about 6 by 14 inches and 11 pounds, and has no grinder, so budget for one. Owner evidence: praise is modestly ahead of complaints, led by ease of use, quality and its small size. Complaints are about build quality and durability, including units that stopped heating.

Breville Barista Express (BES870)

Noolaguide says

Choose it if you want to learn espresso properly without buying a separate grinder. Owner evidence: the owner sample for this machine is small and praise is only slightly ahead of complaints. Breville Barista Touch espresso machine with touchscreen

Breville Barista Touch (BES880)

It heats in three seconds and saves up to eight personalized drinks. Choose it if you want a built-in grinder and as little technique as possible. Noolaguide says

Two boilers, for brewing and steaming at the same time, with a heated group head, digital temperature control, a 58mm portafilter and a shot clock on the display. It has a manual steam wand and no grinder. This verdict rests on the specification: we found very few owner reviews to analyze, and the handful we found were positive.

Footprint is the two horizontal dimensions as listed; all of the machines with a grinder also stand about 16 to 18 inches tall, so check the clearance under your cabinets.

The Oracle models

The three Oracle machines sit at the top of the range. Each grinds, doses and tamps for you and textures milk automatically, so you get a semi-automatic machine’s espresso with most of the work done.

  • Oracle. Dual boilers, a built-in conical burr grinder, automatic milk, a display with one-shot, two-shot and manual options, and a one-touch Americano.
  • Oracle Touch. The same approach with a touchscreen: swipe and select a drink, and save up to eight of your own.
  • Oracle Jet. A fast-heating ThermoJet system, a grinder with 45 settings, cold brew and cold espresso, and milk settings for dairy, soy, almond and oat.

Owner evidence is thin on all three. On the Oracle Jet, the small sample we found leaned toward complaints, mainly units that did not work properly. At this level we would want a stronger owner record before recommending one over the machines above. Our dual boiler guide compares them on specification.

One we would pass over

  • Bambino Plus. On paper it improves on the Bambino. In the owner reviews we analyzed, complaints outnumbered praise, led by units that did not work properly and durability. The Bambino has the better owner feedback.

How to choose

  1. Grinder or no grinder? If you have a good burr grinder, a Bambino or the Dual Boiler. If not, a Barista model. See the best burr coffee grinders.
  2. How much do you want to do yourself? Express for hands-on, Pro for the same with less waiting, Touch for guidance and automatic milk.
  3. Check the space. These range from compact to very large. Our guide to small espresso machines has the footprints.
  4. Plan the upkeep. Descale and clean on schedule; see how to clean an espresso machine.

Methodology

This comparison is built mainly from each machine’s published specification, as stated on its current product listing. Owner-review findings are included for the models where we have verified reviews, and are marked as owner evidence wherever they appear; several of those samples are small, and we say so. No sponsored reviews, no manufacturer units, and no invented reviewers. Noolaguide does not claim hands-on testing.
