How Long Do Air Fryers Last? What Owner Reviews Show

Owner reviews cannot give an average lifespan, but they show when air fryers fail. Across 44 air fryers, 60% of the failure complaints that give a timeframe say months, and 34% say a few years. On basket models, three in four dated failures come within months. A frequent fault is a unit that stops heating.

What reviews can and cannot tell you

We do not have an honest number of years to give you, and it is worth saying why. Owners whose air fryer works rarely mention its age. Owners whose air fryer fails nearly always do. Reviews are a poor guide to the average life of an air fryer and a good guide to when and how failures happen.

This page reports that. It draws on the complaints in verified owner reviews of 44 air fryers: basket models, dual-basket models and oven-style models.

When failures happen

We took every durability or breakdown complaint that stated a timeframe and grouped them.

When the owner says it failedAll air fryersBasket modelsOven-style models
Within days or weeks6%6%6%
Within months60%76%48%
Within a few years34%18%46%

Two things stand out.

Most dated failures are early. Two in three happen in under a year or so.

Basket and oven-style models fail on different schedules. Basket-model failures are concentrated in the first months. Oven-style failures are split almost evenly between months and years.

That does not mean oven-style models are the more durable choice. Overall, their owners are much less satisfied: basket models draw about five and a half times as much praise as complaint, oven-style models a little under two.

What goes wrong

  • It stops heating. Heating is about one complaint in nine across the category, and about half of those are units that stopped heating or never got hot.
  • It stops working altogether. Will not power on, or cuts out.
  • The controls fail. Buttons that stop responding.
  • The coating wears. Much rarer in the reviews than buyers expect: a handful of complaints across 44 models.

Durability is not the most common complaint about air fryers; size is. But our Air Fryer Complaint Report found it is the one that costs a model the most in its rating. Owners forgive a basket that is a little small. They do not forgive a unit that dies.

What you can do about it

Before you buy

  1. Read the warranty length on the listing.
  2. Buy where returns are easy.
  3. Choose on the model’s record. Our best air fryers guide ranks each model on how its owner praise balances against its complaints, with reliability weighted most heavily.

In the first month

  1. Use it often. The aim is to expose a fault while you can still send it back.
  2. Keep the box until the return window closes.

For as long as you own it

  1. Keep it clean, including around the heating element. See how to clean an air fryer.
  2. Give it room. Leave space behind and above for air to circulate while it runs.
  3. Be gentle with a coated basket. No metal tools, no abrasive pads.

Still choosing? How to choose an air fryer takes the decisions in order.

How this was put together

We analyzed the complaints in verified owner reviews of 44 air fryers. For timing, we counted every durability or breakdown complaint that stated when the failure happened, and grouped them by days, weeks, months and years. Complaints that state a timeframe are a subset of all complaints, and some individual models have small samples, so the figures describe the pattern across the group, not any one model. Models were grouped as basket or oven style by design. Noolaguide does not claim hands-on testing.

Cosori TurboBlaze 6-quart air fryer

Cosori TurboBlaze 6-Quart Air Fryer

Noolaguide says

The air fryer to buy for most kitchens. It has by far the largest owner sample of any air fryer we analyzed, and the most favorable: praise outweighs complaints by more than fifteen to one. Frying quality leads the praise, then easy cleaning and ease of use. Six quarts suits one to three people, and the basket has a ceramic coating marketed as PFAS-free. The complaints are few: size, in both directions, then cleaning the basket, and a small number of units that stopped heating.
