Two quarts or four? What owners say
This is the decision that matters, and the owner reviews are unusually clear about it.
On two of the three 2-quart air fryers we analyzed, size is the top complaint by a wide margin. Owners say it plainly: it is smaller than it looked, it holds one portion, and they should have bought the 4-quart.
On the 4-quart models, size complaints are few, and they are split between people who wanted larger and people who wanted smaller.
So unless you cook strictly for one and have very little counter, buy 4 quarts. It is still a compact appliance, and it is the size at which owner satisfaction is highest. For the full range, see what size air fryer you need.
Ninja AF101 Air Fryer, 4 Quart
The compact air fryer to buy unless you have a reason not to. It has one of the deepest owner records of any air fryer, and praise outweighs complaints nearly four to one. Owners praise the frying above all, then how easy it is to clean and use. Four quarts cooks two portions in a single layer. The complaint to know is durability: some owners report it failing after one to three years, and a few mention a smell that did not fade.

Chefman 4 QT Compact Air Fryer
The same useful size as the Ninja for less, with owner feedback that is at least as favorable: praise outweighs complaints about four to one, led by frying quality, ease of use, easy cleaning and value. Its record is shallower than the Ninja's, and its complaints are more particular. A few owners report a chemical smell that did not go away, a handful report rust spots inside after some months, and some dislike the touch controls.

Instant Vortex Plus Mini 4 Qt 6-in-1 Air Fryer
A third well-liked 4-quart, with a deep owner record and six cooking functions. Praise outweighs complaints about three to one, led by frying quality and ease of use. The complaints are spread thin: a smell on some units, touch controls that some owners find fiddly, and a few failures. A good choice if you prefer its look or find it at a better price than the two above.

- Instant Vortex Plus 6-in-1 Basket Air Fryer, 4qt
Cuisinart Air Fryer with Glass Basket and ClearView Window, 4 Qt
For buyers who would rather not cook on a nonstick coating at all. The basket is glass, so there is nothing to scratch or wear, and you can watch the food through the window. Owner feedback is the most favorable of any model here — praise outweighs complaints nearly eight to one — but it is a recent model with a much thinner record. Owners' main complaint is that 4 quarts feels smaller than expected; some also find it cooks more slowly than their old air fryer, and that it came with little instruction.

Chefman 2 Qt Mini Air Fryer
The mini to buy if you truly cook for one and space is tight. It has a very deep owner record for a 2-quart, and owners praise the frying, its size for one person, and how easy it is to use and clean; praise outweighs complaints about two to one. Go in clear-eyed: being too small is its largest complaint by far, and durability, a chemical smell and weak heating each come up as well. If you are unsure, the 4-quart picks have happier owners.

Popular models we did not pick
- Dash Tasti-Crisp 2.6 Qt. One of the most-owned small air fryers, but owner feedback in our analysis was only modestly positive, and a chemical smell was its most common complaint.
- Cosori Lite 2.1 Qt. Modestly positive, with units breaking within months the main complaint.
- COMFEE’ 2.1 Qt Mini. A reasonable alternative to the Chefman Mini with slightly better feedback on a much thinner record; nearly half its complaints are that it is too small.
How to choose
- Pick the size first. One person and very little space: 2 quarts. Everyone else: 4 quarts.
- Decide about the basket. If you want to avoid nonstick, the glass-basket Cuisinart is the compact option; our non-toxic air fryer guide has more.
- Run it empty before the first cook. A few minutes at high heat clears the new-appliance smell on most units.

Methodology
We rank small air fryers — 2 to 4 quarts — on verified owner reviews across eight models: how each one’s praise balances against its complaints, what specifically goes wrong, and how deep its owner record is, with reliability weighted most heavily. Capacity and basket material are taken from each product’s own specification. Where a pick’s owner record is thin, we say so. Verdicts are synthesized from the accumulated experience of verified owners at scale — no sponsored reviews, no manufacturer units, and no invented reviewers. Noolaguide does not claim hands-on testing.
