Steel or glass? What owners say
The classic French press is a glass beaker in a metal frame. It is also where the complaints are.
We analyzed three well-known glass presses. On all three, durability was the most common complaint: glass that cracked in normal use, sometimes within days or weeks. On two of the three, complaints matched or outnumbered praise.
The two stainless steel presses had none of that, and owner feedback on both was far more favorable. You give up watching the coffee brew. You gain a press that survives being knocked in the sink.
Secura Stainless Steel French Press, 34 oz
The French press to buy. It has the deepest owner record of the presses we analyzed and the most favorable feedback: praise outweighs complaints more than four to one. Owners praise the build quality, how easily it cleans, how sturdy it feels and how well it keeps coffee hot. Being steel, it cannot shatter, which is the fault that sinks the glass presses. The complaints are a minority view on the same points: some owners say it does not hold heat as well as advertised, and a few find it harder to clean than glass.

Mueller Stainless Steel French Press, 34 oz
A close second with the same advantages: a steel body that cannot shatter and owner praise nearly four to one over complaints. Owners praise the quality, easy cleaning, ease of use and heat retention. Its distinct complaint is the filter: a few owners report the mesh screens fraying or separating over time. Choose between this and the Secura on looks and availability; the owner evidence slightly favors the Secura.

AeroPress Original Coffee Press
Not a French press, but the alternative to consider if sediment bothers you. It brews one cup at a time through a paper filter, so the cup is clean, and cleanup is the trait owners praise most, ahead of ease of use and portability. Praise outweighs complaints about three and a half to one. The main complaint is price for a plastic device, and a few owners find it more effort than a machine. See our guide to using one before you decide.

Popular models we did not pick
- Bodum Chambord. The classic glass press. Owner feedback in our analysis was evenly split, with glass cracking the main complaint. Some owners also say newer units use more plastic than older ones.
- Bodum Brazil. Complaints outnumbered praise, led by the glass shattering.
- Cafe Du Chateau. Modestly positive, but durability and leaking were common complaints.
How to choose
- Pick steel unless you want to watch the brew. It is the more durable choice by a wide margin in owner reports.
- Grind coarse. A French press needs a coarse, even grind; a burr grinder gives you that. See the best coffee grinders.
- Decide whether sediment bothers you. If it does, choose the AeroPress and read how to use an AeroPress.
For ratio, grind and steep time, see how to use a French press.
Methodology
We rank French presses on verified owner reviews across six models: how each one’s praise balances against its complaints, what specifically goes wrong, and how deep its owner record is, with durability weighted most heavily. Where a pick’s owner sample is small, we say so. Verdicts are synthesized from the accumulated experience of verified owners at scale — no sponsored reviews, no manufacturer units, and no invented reviewers. Noolaguide does not claim hands-on testing.
